Is myspace really as dangerous as people say? Have that many people really gotten hurt from it?

my mom keeps shoving pieces of paper in my face saying all these people *mostly girls like me* have been kindapped, raped, murdered all because they have a myspace. i just wanted to know if this is all really true. i mean i havent heard anything on the news or in the paper. so im just wondering.

Myspace is not dangerous, but there are dangerous people on myspace and all over the internet. Don't put information that is too personal on your profile (your address/phone number, where your school is, your last name...). And don't meet anyone from there in person unless you go with a group of people to a public location.

You can have a myspace account but it's the information you make available to others that can hurt you. If you decide to have an account, lie about your location and don't think just because they are on your friends list that they can be trusted.

It all depends on how you use it. If your posting pictures of your self in a bathing suit, telling people where you live or starting trouble with someone, then you'll most likely to get into trouble with an on-line prediator. just if you ahve one post information you want others to know about. but needless to say, you can always get introuble with an on-line prediator so be careful ok?

There are currently are large amount of "phishing" emails going around regarding kids being kidnapped, raped, murdered because of myspace website. These emails are frauds and direct people to links on "protecting" you family and either install key logging software or ask you to check for your child's profile and change settings etc.. all in an effort to get username and passwords for other malicious acts

Like everything in life, you have to be careful. It is easy to be fooled by people online whether you are 15 or 55. Don't do things online that you would not do offline.

As with anything on the internet, you must use good judgement and a little common sense.

What your mom is showing you are people who fail to use either one.

If you insist on using myspace, fine, but DON'T GIVE YOUR ADDRESS, PHONE, AGE, NAME, OR ANYTHING THAT SOME PEDOPHILE MAY BE ABLE TO USE TO TRACK YOU DOWN.

Even your actual picture should be avoided. You must realize that the technology available to anyone will allow serious freaks to locate you through IM, by "worms", by a variety of different programs, and don't think for a minute that these people are stupid when it comes to technology and how to use it.

These young girls, like yourself put real time info, using completely inappropriate pictures of themselves in provocative poses and they think it's cool. That is, until they are solicted by some freak and fall pray to all kinds of horrible things. Don't be stupid. Don't think that "it won't happen to me". I have NO DOUBT this same thinking was going on with the same people and young girls who ended up on the side of the road dead somewhere.

Look, it is really a sad day for all of us, decent, honorable people that use the internet that we have to go to such protections from the low-life scum that take advantage. However, it is a reality, that unfortunatly we can't stop. So, since it is not possible at this point to eradicate all these POS out there, we have to be smarter than them. Simple enough...

As far as the 'news" goes, honey you need to pay more attention to it. If listening to the news is boring for you, my guess it is, just type something like "dangers of myspace" on the internet and read about it.

Are they making too much of it, you may ask. Possibly, but is your very LIFE worth it? I mean really worth it? NAW... It's not, you are much to precious as a child with your future to the world to jepordize your safty in such a way. Your our future, it is up to you to carry this world to a better place someday, we need every single one of you healthy, proud, and smart to improve life for the future. We sure won't be here, so it is up to you... Remember that the next time your mom shows you something about "good judgement, and common sense on the internet, and LISTEN...
